Courage and devotion are attributes that come from people with big hearts, and Jim and Jane Knopick are the embodiment of these qualities
They are as modest as they are generous.
On top having full-time jobs, the Knopicks put in five hours a day, seven days a week, raising money for Camp Courageous of Iowa.
Camp Courageous is a recreational and care facility for individuals with disabilities and is run completely on donations and the hard work of volunteers.
The Knopicks raise funds by maintaining sucker boxes - in which people donate a quarter in exchange for a sucker - across the state. All of the money goes to the camp either in the form of a check, or by purchasing something that the camp needs.
"I don't think people know just how much time and effort is put in to maintaining these sucker boxes," said their daughter, Jennifer Montgomery. "My mother literally gets up at 5 a.m. to fill the boxes, and then does not get home until 6 or 7 at night because she goes out to check the boxes after work, as does my dad."
There are about 270 sucker box locations in 20 towns spread across the state, all of which the Knopicks have selflessly and single-handedly attended to for the past nine years.
"We're very lucky," Jane said. "I think that God helps us. He wants us to do it, so he helps us out."
