Michael New

He's UI's billion-dollar man

Those who are lucky enough to be acquainted with Michael New know him as a loving family man, an honest and hard worker, and a witty humorist.

Everyone else will remember him another way: a guy who helped push the University of Iowa into the next century. As president of the UI Foundation from 1998 to 2005, Michael headed the "Good. Better. Best. Iowa" campaign.

This endeavor lasted more than seven years and "was the largest fundraising effort ever attempted by the University of Iowa, or by any organization in the state of Iowa," New said. In all, the "Good. Better. Best. Iowa" campaign raised more than $1 billion for the university.

"UI alumni, faculty and staff, and other friends of the university are incredibly generous and, when asked to support something they care about, will respond in ways far beyond what anyone might anticipate," he said.

The money raised by the campaign will benefit every aspect of the university. It has been integral in helping UI maintain its reputation and distinction as one of the finest higher education institutions in the country and will contribute to the security of the university's future.

Michael New has a great love and appreciation for Iowa City and the state of Iowa.

"In 1960, he came to Iowa City and began a love affair with this town and the University of Iowa, which is ongoing to this date. He received both of his degrees here, a B.A. in journalism and an M.A. in sociology. He met my mother at the Airliner," said his daughter, Jennifer.

"You would be hard pressed to find another community of Iowa City's size with such a unique combination of small-town virtues and the 'big-city' amenities. We enjoy in the arts, culture, athletics, health care, restaurants and so forth. It's that blend of attractions and services that puts Iowa City on so many best places to retire lists," New said. "As for the state of Iowa, you can't find better, more honest, generous thoughtful and helpful people anywhere."

- Jacob Maxson
