Mary Mathew Wilson, who has worked for the University of Iowa since 1991, said she feels connected and has a deep appreciation for her UI experiences.
"It's the best community I've ever had," she said.
In July 2005, UI, with a joint agreement between the Office of the Provost and Student Services, created the Civic Engagement Program.
Mathew Wilson became the new civic engagement
coordinator, a role
reassignment based on her
previous experience. In this role, she utilizes the friendships and relationships she's built by connecting UI and its resources to the surrounding community.
She enjoys sorting things out and filling needs with others' strengths.
"The synergy is wonderful," she said.
Mathew Wilson's work helps the community become more engaged with UI. But, she's quick to point out, "It works both ways."
In February 2004, Mathew Wilson also became the point of contact for Campus Compact, a national organization. She's the liaison for the UI division, part of the Iowa Campus Compact, helping higher education become more engaged with the community.
"Sometimes it's serendipity," she said. "Someone walks in looking to volunteer and then I get a call from someone looking for volunteers. I help connect the two."
She said she enjoys working with student volunteers, providing them with real-world experiences, and finds this to be the most rewarding part of her long UI career.
"It gives me hope to see young people take action with energy and good hearts," she said.
